Nimbus

A PROPOSAL BY JENNY SABIN STUDIO FOR THE KCMO ONE PERCENT FOR ART PROGRAM COMPETITION

Originally conceptualized for the 2020 Kansas City One Percent for Art Program, Nimbus is an experiential installation designed for the connector between the new concourses at Kansas City International Airport. The project reflects the mission of Jenny Sabin Studio to create locally inspired, human-centered installations that use color and light to engage diverse communities. It also aligns with the program’s goal of celebrating Kansas City–inspired public art that enhances public spaces and encourages curiosity and wonder.

Nimbus functions as a wayfinding device, an overhead mobile installation intended to unify the airport’s concourses and guide travelers along the connector. Its design integrates color, reflected and refracted light, and dichroic materials to create a choreographed interplay of light and movement. Through soft, luminous forms and responsive materials, the installation aims to promote well-being while offering a welcoming, transformative environment.

The installation consists of three luminous, cloud-like bands suspended across the people movers and central walkway. Inspired by the airport’s legacy in modern aviation, the structure is lightweight, dynamic, and visually striking. It is constructed from hundreds of digitally knitted cones made from industrial-grade, fire code–compliant PTFE yarn. These cones are tensioned within a lightweight machined steel mesh composed of circular rings. Two linear bands hover above the moving walkways, enhancing the travel experience between concourses, while a sinuous ribbon of light flows above the central pedestrian path. Each cone contains a rotating polycarbonate disc coated with wavelength-sensitive dichroic film. Integrated LED lighting illuminates the structure, while natural air currents gently move the discs, producing an ever-changing display of color, reflection, and shadow.
